Kanat Skakov is a partner in Salans' Almaty office. In addition to acting as head of the firm's tax practice in Kazakhstan, he also specialises in customs, corporate and regulatory matters.
Kanat is a very experienced litigator who has successfully represented major oil and gas companies, international service providers to the oil & gas industry, airlines, international banks and manufacturing businesses in more than 250 tax and customs cases over the past eight years. He also advises clients on issues related to investigations by Kazakhstan law enforcement agencies on tax, customs and regulatory matters.
Kanat has extensive tax planning experience in a diverse range of industries with significant investments in Kazakhstan, including natural resources, real estate, consumer goods, and oil and gas services.
From 2001-2008 Kanat taught at the Kazakh State Law Academy, later renamed the Kazakh Humanitarian Law University, where he was involved in an educational project under the EU TACIS programme. In 2002 he was involved in another TACIS project to further the development of the Customs Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
