Abai Shaikenov is a partner in Salans’ Almaty office.

Having worked at Salans for more than 15 years, Abai has particular experience in a wide range of banking and finance and real estate projects. His work extends to advising on multilateral institution financing, structuring of transactions, foreign investment and various corporate matters related to investing and doing business in Kazakhstan.

Abai is a regular speaker at conferences and is a contributing author to many local and international legal and business publications. He is consistently named as a leading expert in Kazakhstan by Legal 500, Who’s Who Legal, IFLR1000, and Who’s Who in the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Recent Experience:

  • Acting as Kazakhstan counsel on a USD 600 million financing transaction involving a major lending institution and a large oil and gas company in Kazakhstan
  • Acting as Kazakhstan counsel on a USD 81 million financing transaction involving a major international lending institution to a pipeline company in Kazakhstan
  • Representing interests of major oil company in USD 25 million tax litigation
  • Advising, as Kazakhstan counsel, in creating a joint venture for the creation and operation of the National Petrobank
