Salans Expands Labour and Employment Practice in China

14 January 2010

Salans today announces the appointment of two new lawyers to its Shanghai office. Dr Iris Duchetsmann and Miss Lijuan Zheng (“Cynthia”) joined the firm on 4 January 2010, with Duchetsmann installed as Salans’ Head of its China Labour Law Group. Both join the firm from the Shanghai office of Beiten Burkhardt.

Alongside her expertise in cross-border employment in China, local labour law and international HR management, Duchetsmann also advises on residency, tax and social security issues. Fluent in Chinese, English and German, Duchetsmann speaks and writes frequently on international and national labour law and HR topics.

She is also qualified to advise on labour law in Germany, providing a unique proposition to Salans’ international client base in China and a direct response to the increasingly important nexus between the two countries. To this end, Duchetsmann will also form part of Salans’ German International Practice Group, which encompasses a network of German-speaking lawyers and tax advisers across 15 of 21 Salans offices.

Salans’ Managing Partner of the Greater China region, Dr Bernd-Uwe Stucken, comments, “By leveraging her previous experience working both in an international firm and as well as an inhouse lawyer, Dr. Duchetsmann is well-positioned to provide our clients with an insight on corporate processes that could be especially beneficial, and is not often found amongst law firms operating in China.

“Salans’ labour and employment team is looking forward to serving clients in the Greater China area with a more comprehensive capability than ever before.”

Already one of the largest international law firms in Shanghai, Salans is one of a small group of international law firms with a presence in three key markets of Greater China – Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. As part of 750 lawyers globally operating across 21 offices, Salans’ Global Employment Group provides advice and training to a range of clients from small enterprises to multinational groups in all aspects of labour and employment law including: restructuring and redundancy, litigation, employee benefits, employment compliance audits, employment practices, disciplinary and grievance procedures and issues, discrimination, employee competition and confidentiality policies, expatriate immigration and visas.
