On 22 December 2009, the Alsace region signed an energy performance contract with a company set up by GDF SUEZ Energie Services, Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations and the FIDEPPP. This is the first energy performance contract concluded as a partnership agreement.
The subject of the contract was a group of 14 "lycées" (secondary schools), and its aim was to reduce primary energy consumption by some 35% and lower greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 65% (90,000 tonnes of CO2 saved during the term of the contract).
Contracts of this kind, of which many more will be seen in the future, come from the work of the Grenelle de l’Environnement forum. Their aim is to reduce energy consumption in buildings and the production of greenhouse gases. In this innovative scheme, the energy service company makes a commitment on the energy savings it determines.
