Focus on Asia - 2nd Edition
Welcome to the second edition of Focus on Asia. After the positive reception received to our first edition, with much of our European and US client base for the first time being introduced to our Asian presence in such a detailed and insightful manner, we have again tasked our lawyers to bring you a snapshot of the business issues and developments taking place in this dynamic market. Though the days of double-digit economic growth may be in the past, China particularly remains a compelling proposition for any investor and as such, we have been taking steps to ensure we are resourced accordingly to help clients navigate through the effects of the global financial crisis and seize the opportunities in the market which remain.
Since we last went to print, a lot has happened in our Asian developments: we successfully opened our Beijing office late last year, and in the springtime of this year held an official client reception to launch the Greater China practice. We have also just officially opened our 21st office globally, and third office in the region, in Hong Kong. But we are never ones to rest on our laurels – the Hong Kong office also serves as the firm’s centre for future growth in Asia and already we have some exciting prospects which we are investigating further.
Our Shanghai Managing Partner, Dr Bernd Stucken now also leads the firm’s Greater China practice and his former co-Managing Partner in Shanghai, John Flanigan, has taken up a new post as Head of China in our Paris office. Fusing together our traditional European base to the Asian market is key to our strategy not just for Asia, but for the firm. The global financial crisis has affected different markets in different ways but one thing is consistent across the board: the timely, tailored delivery of legal and business advice remains of most importance to our clients and it is this client-centered approach which began from our first office in Paris over 30 years ago, and continues today across the firm to our newest office in Hong Kong.
